Faces of Georgia – a land tries to stand up, Date of Broadcasting: 4. / 8.12.2010
Two years after the Caucasus war the wounds in Georgia are still visible. Many buildings in Tbilissi are damaged. Hundreds of thousands of refugees live in emergency accommodations. The population fights against the difficult economic situation: Uncountable Georgians are unemployed; many enter service as day laborer. Old people work because their pension is too low. And the conflict with Russia still smoulders because Russia supports both rebel regions Abkhazia and South Ossetia – which Georgia wanted to get back in August 2008. At the same time many Georgians deeply believe that the situation is getting better in general. They are tired of wars and conflicts and want to build up their country. And they would like to be supported by the European Union and the USA. In Batumi, for example, there are a lot of Turkish investors who are spending millions of euros on new luxury hotels and casinos. The tourism sector in Georgia booms – not only in Batumi. In the cities many new front sides shine as if they ran a race… but is it a sustainable development? Georgia – a country between resignation and times of change.
